Hi all! I’m sorry that I haven’t posted any more of POM. I do promise to finish it. I think the last book coming out kinda took the wind out of my sails. That happened after book 6 came out as well. It’s just odd finishing a story that is so out of canon, but I will finish it as soon as I can manage to write again.

I am still working on losing weight and getting healthy. I’m down to 178, and progress has been slow, but it sure beats the hell out of 225!

I do have some happy news. After several years of on and off work, I have finally got my recipe website on line! It’s got over 1500 recipes on it so far, and I’m still adding to it. Please feel free to send a link out to anyone you know who might enjoy a recipe sight. This site has a bunch of family recipes on it, as well as other things. So if you want to give me a thrill, go check it out.

I also went over the links for my stories on my fanfic website and fixed a lot of links that weren’t working, so that’s sorted.

And I wrote 3 whole pages on the next chapter of Price of Madness! A little more, and it will be off to the beta! I’m not sure why I haven’t been able to write. This happened to me once before when I was in the middle of Unlikely Bedfellows, and I couldn’t write a word for 6 months. Ugh! I think the ol’ muse is starting to perk up again, so wish me luck!

The bad news, I promised my readers two chapters by the end of May, and I haven't been able to do it. I suck!
The good news, I am writing again for the first time since January, so I will definitely be updating as soon as I can get another chapter finished. It's a great relief to be writing again at all. So the guilt factor did work, I'm at least writing again at last. But I'm very mortified that I wasn't able to make my deadline.
My readers rock! The Kentucky Humane society got an extra 150 bucks just from my readers! Thank all those who donated! You guys rock!

Update News and a 5k bribe

So, I’ve been working on losing weight and being more healthy since mid-January, and I’ve lost 40 lbs so far! Go me! Then, I hear on the radio that there is a 5k walk to benefit the Kentucky Humane society. Walking to aid furry homeless babies, what could be more up my alley? Walking, good for me and my weight loss; money, good for the furries.

I’ve got a deal to make you all. I’ve been concentrating on my health, and found it very hard to get writing again. I need something to kick me in the butt and give me a deadline! So here’s the deal. I’m asking my readers to make a donation for my 5k, if you are able. In return, I’m promising you not one, but two more chapters by the end of May. And I’m not asking anyone to break the bank, even just a couple bucks would help. Those small donations add up quickly, and they really help animals in need.

So what’s up with me?

I do have a chapter of PoM to update, and I’ll try to get it done sometime this weekend. I haven’t done much writing lately, because I’ve been busy. This time, work is not the culprit. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m working on losing weight. I was at 225 lbs when I started mid January, and I’m now down to 195. I’ve lost 30 lbs! Unfortunately, I still have 50 to go, but 50 is a lot more doable than 80!

Diet and exercise have been taking a lot of my time, and a lot of my mental energy, so it’s been hard to write. But I just have to do it. Both my folks have adult onset diabetes, and if I start being healthier now, then I can avoid that, along with a myriad of other health problems.

The good news, other than my weight loss, is that after this coming week, I’ll be laid off of work for a while. Not good news for my bank account, but good for writing time! I am still hoping to get PoM finished before book 7 comes out, so there should be more regular updates on PoM soon.

So wish me luck on the weight loss, and on the writing! You know, this is the first time I’ve weighed less than 200 lbs in about 8 years. If I can get down to 175, it will be the first time I weighed that since I was 16 years old!

Argh!

I haven’t posted here in forever. I’ve been so busy! My work exploded, and I’ve been working loads of overtime. That’s nice for my pocketbook, but not very conducive to having any time to be online. Next week should be my last overtime week, and then I’ll be back to normal.

In writing news, I’ve written chapters 26 and 27 of PoM, but there seems to be a bit of a hold up at the beta. No worries, I’m sure it will be straightened out soon!

In other news, Pook is on a diet. Ick! :D 4 days so far, and hopefully I’ll stick to it. To encourage my sticking to it, I started a weight loss support yahoo group for HP fans. I also started an LJ community for keeping food diaries. If any of you want to join me on my quest-

Finally! I finally finished the first draft of chapter 25! I wouldn’t look for it to update too soon though. It is almost the holidays and I am hoping that both of my betas have better things to do than beta this chapter! Hopefully it will be posted as a belated holiday present shortly after the first of the year.

Speaking of holidays, here’s the final count of what Pook’s made for Christmas.

Ok, I’ve almost got the next chapter finished. Almost. I think I can top it off tomorrow and then send if off to the betas, so maybe I’ll manage a little update holiday present yet.

I was hoping to finish it over a week ago, but Christmas is sneaking up behind me on little ferret feet and I’m not ready! Bri and I don’t have much money, so Christmas presents from me are generally of the “what can I make that will be nice but very cheap?” variety. This year, it’s mostly scarves. I got the yarn on sale, Gods bless Hobby Lobby, and I’m knitting like a fiend. So far, I’ve knit 13 scarves and I have several yet to do. Time consuming, but cheap! I also printed some recipe books of family recipes and put them into three ring binders. And I made 3 baby blankets. And I covered a photo album. *sigh* A Pooka’s work is never done! So I apologize for the update delay, but I haven’t been able to help it.

Just a note about what’s up with me. I’ve had nearly a whole week off but it’s been a busy one! I put so many things off while my work was busy. So there was cleaning and laundry to do. I started working on some scarves that I’m knitting folks for Christmas. I got two finished that were already in various states of completion. I got two done from scratch and started a third. Wednesday, Bri and I went to the riverboat because I needed a prize. We didn’t win, but we played for hours and got to eat at the buffet there and only ended up spending 40 bucks. Not bad for an afternoon of gambling! My family’s turkey day was on Friday this year, so I spent Thursday cooking, and Friday eating. Yesterday, our friend Rich’s little girl had a birthday, so we spent 4 hours at Chuck E Cheese. FOUR HOURS! Don’t get me wrong, I had fun, but I was tired when we got out of there! Then we did a bit of pet and grocery shopping, and to top it all off, I did a complete cleaning of our 10 gallon fish tank. It took two hours. Our pleco had died a bit ago, and we had some terrible algae that had to be scrubbed off of everything. The three goldfish spent the time in a cooking pot with a bubbler, and they were not amused, but they seem to be getting over it. Now the tank is clean clean clean, and ready for a new pleco. And maybe a ghost shrimp. And a snail. Lol, I need a bigger tank to have more fun, but we don’t have anywhere to put it! I tend to overcrowd the ten gallon a bit, but it’s got a lot of extra filtration on it.

So that was this week in Pookaville! Notice there wasn’t a lot of writing mentioned. I have started the next chapter of PoM, and I’m hoping to get it finished today, so cross your fingers for me!

Fic writing news

So I posted chapter 23 yesterday, and I was very worried that it would be awhile before I could post again. My work is busy and I’m working some overtime. We’re building a show that we really didn’t have time to build. I work with 3 intelligent and kind women, but we’re getting tired and worried so folks are understandably grumpy and tempers are a bit high. I got 23 posted last night, after having worked all day Saturday, and 24 was a big blank page on my word program. I hadn’t started it at all, not one word. And I was very much afraid that I wouldn’t be able to quiet my head enough to get it started until that show I’m working on opened, over a week from now.

Then an amazing thing happened. I read something that someone wrote about my story that really had an effect on me. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’ve always been blessed with very kind readers, and I couldn’t begin to tell you how many of them have inspired me to keep plugging away. Even so, what this woman wrote was so thoughtful and so kind that it really blew me away. To start with, she rec’d my fic on WIKTT. Now, there have been some kind folks there who thank me for my updates, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually been rec’d there. If I have, it’s been long enough that I’ve forgotten. But what she said astounded me most of all. I was so pleased by it, that I printed it up to show Bri. And I remain so pleased by it, that I’m going to put it here in a cut, and risk seeming like an uppity fanfic diva. I’m not really a fanfic diva, but with such kind readers as I have, I’m going to have to be careful about getting a swelled head!

RE: [WIKTT] **Update** The Price of Madness

Bill Weasley is so cool! Gives one hope for Ron in the future. I know that
every time the Tartan WaterHorse updates this fic, I go on about how great
it is, but this time I feel the need to expand on my praise. People are
always asking for fic rec’s on this group and this is one that you really
must read.

Pook’s characterization of the supporting cast is one that gives them a
realism and depth that many HG/SS fail to do. The boys are well drawn and
very funny at times, accepting of Hermione’s choices yet not above teasing
the hell out of her for those choices, in the way of true friends. Draco is
shown as more than just an arrogant little snot. Cheeky is the only word I
can use to describe him especially in the most recent chapter, and his sense
of duty is reflected in his relationship with Snape. The story
acknowledges the period of growing up that Draco had to go through regarding
the events of book 6.

Hermione is not shown as perfect, in fact her own flaws are laid bare for
all to see but not in a way that is annoying to the reader. She is NOT the
muggleborn witch poster child that many show her as but rather a bright and
caring young woman with a limit to her patience and a strong sense of ‘what
is right’. To understand the characterization of Serverus Snape you really
have to read the story. Please trust me though, it is one that blends many
of the cannon traits with those we, as WIKTTers, are searching for in our
stories.

Pook carefully winds very realistic feeling and logical information in
regards to the outside wizarding world with a fresh and refreshing plot
line. Angst and humour are well balanced along with an intriguing mystery
that lends itself to speculation. I have threatened on more than one
occasion to wait till it is finished to read the story as a whole, but I can
not help myself. I leap on each new update and devour it along with
re-reading a couple of the previous chapters each time. In fact, Price of
Madness is one of the only two fan fic’s I have printed in order to re-read
away from the screen. If you don’t like reading WIP fics and would like to
sample some of Pook’s completed works, I also highly recommend Naked Journey
and Overcome with Feeling, both of which are available in their completed
glory on Petulant Poetess.

I just want to say thank you to the Tartan Waterhorse for all the
entertainment she has given me and others with her wonderful stories and
recommend anyone to peruse her work.

So the whole point of this post is not actually to show off in diva fashion, but to thank Planescape Bard, and to let you know that not only did I quiet my head, but I was so inspired last night that I wrote half of the first draft of chapter 23 and I finished it today. There will be no long, dreary wait between updates, and I’ll get it posted as soon as the betas have time to have their wicked way with it. And I tell you, it’s quite a relief not to have to worry about the next update during this busy time.

I finally finished my SS/HG exchange fic! And with two weeks to go until the deadline, thank Merlin and the horse he rode in on. Plenty of time for the betas to have their wicked way with it, and still get it posted on time.

I was worried about this one. Work is still being kind of a bitch (we’re building Narnia now, fun but a lot to do.) and it’s been hard to quiet my brain enough to sit down and write. On my first exchange fic, I got my prompt, and I had it finished in a couple of days. It just seemed to pour out. This one, it was like I had to beat it out of my head with a big stick, but despite all of that, I’m fairly pleased with how it turned out. It’s not quite as long as I would like, but it’s a fair length for a one-shot.

This round, the exchange stories have to be completed when turned in, and I’m glad that they decided to do it that way. The fic I got for my gift last time was fabulous, but it was a WIP and the author never wrote any more of it. That’s a shame because it got off to a great start. Hey! If you haven’t been to the exchange archive and read any of the fics from the first exchange, I highly recommend it. There were some great fics that came out of that exchange.

It was also a relief to get another chapter of PoM up, and I’ve started the next chapter so I’m hoping that I can get it written without needing that big stick to whomp myself upside the head with. It would be nice if I could keep posting every 1-2 weeks instead of the once a month it’s been for the last few chapters. Things are heating up in that fic, and it’s only going to be another chapter or three before some major mysteries get explained. So it should be big fun to write, iffen I can just sit down and do it!

Now this is a general fic, and lightly rated, and it made me chuckle all day long! Warty brings to life a lowly Bowtruckle with all skill and charm with which she introduced us to the inner musings of a Dementor named Pumbles.

I love Twiggy, and this witty one-shot is a great way to take a little break from your life for a moment and have a good giggle. It was written for SH’s October “Dirty Dozen” challenge, where they list twelve items you have to include in the story. I can’t imagine anyone using those items as cleverly and hysterically as Warty used some of them. Do yourself a favor, go read, have a laugh, and don’t forget to leave a review.

A Slip of the Tongue by GinnyW

I adore this fic. It deals with some serious trust issues, but it does it in a way that doesn’t wallow in the bogs of angst. There’s humor mixed into it, and romance; it’s altogether a delightful read. My sole complaint is that she doesn’t update nearly often enough to suit me, but I can’t complain because my own updates have been slower than hers! It’s a SS/HG story, and it’s rated “R”, so don’t be reading it if you aren’t legal! In the most recent chapter, things are really starting to heat up with our intrepid couple. Yummy! GinnyW writes a more exciting kiss that most folks write lemons.

A Treat of the Trick by Wolf Moonshadow

It’s rated MA (NC-17), but it’s a light NC-17. This wicked little set of 100-word drabbles is the perfect chocolate covered treat for this Halloween.

Rated NC-17, and it starts a bit rough. This is not one of my usual happy go lucky recs, but it has an amazing progression from rather dark to unbelievably full of hope and then races right on to happiness. Definitely worth a read, and then a re-read. Don’t forget to bookmark it.
